Frequently Asked Questions
- So what is the Learning Center?
The Learning Center is the largest consortium of postsecondary institutions in the state of Louisiana. This semester, we have 10 different colleges and universities teaching more than 70 courses. - What kind of classes can you take at the Learning Center?
Our course offerings range from developmental courses and technical certifications to graduate degrees. We offer a variety of degree programs, including nursing, criminal justice, radiologic technology, social work, human resources and several others - Does the Learning Center offer the same programs as LSUA and LC?
Why do we need another college or university?
The programs offered at the Learning Center for Rapides Parish do not duplicate programs at other local institutions. Those institutions work with the Learning Center to determine what program will be offered and what institutions will offer them. - I've wanted to go back and get my masters, but how can I do that
and work?
Many of our courses are geared toward the non-traditional student. We have a number of late afternoon and evening courses, many of which meet one day a week. Some of the coursework is also available through online classes. - What is the cost for attending the Learning Center?
We are a consortium of colleges and universities, not a degree granting institution. The cost and any requisites for entering a degree program are determined on the individual institution’s level. - If I complete a degree program at the Learning Center, will it be
indicated anywhere on the degree?
No. Again, the student will receive their degree from the college or university through which the coursework was completed. - Do I need to take the GRE to get into a graduate program?
Schools and programs have different entrance requirements. Contact the individual school to determine their requirements. - If a degree program is not offered here that I want, could you get
it out here?
We will soon begin an educational needs assessment of the community. Meanwhile, some different courses are being offered at the Learning Center this spring. If you have a specific request, let us know. We will then work to see what other demand there is for such a degree program in central Louisiana and will determine whether we can meet that need. - What is compressed video? How does it work, and is it an effective
way of teaching a class?
In a compressed video classroom, the instructor teaches the course from one location and is seen via real time video by students in other locations. The classrooms have video cameras and monitors, as well as microphones, for total interaction with the teacher at all times. It is a very effective way for students to take a class that might otherwise only be offered on the institution’s main campus. - How do I apply for admission and register for classes?
The Learning Center holds a registration event twice each semester during which representatives from some of the institutions participating at the Learning Center are on hand to help you register and address any other needs or answer any questions you may have. The registration dates will be posted on our web page when they are set each semester. You can also contact the individual schools to register for classes through them. - How do I find out what courses are being offered next semester?
The courses are listed on our website at www.thelcrp.net. A printed schedule is available each semester as well. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please fill out this form and we will mail a printed schedule to you each semester. - I am interested in renting space for a function. How do I do that?
Room request forms and our fee schedule are available online. You can also call Karen Goree at (318) 484-2184, ext. 122 to reserve a room.
